Businesses are flocking to video to promote their products and services, but there is more to the mentality “if you build it they will come”… Just because you have a promo video, doesn’t necessarily mean people will automatically watch it. There are variables that will affect the success of your video campaign – recognize the pitfalls so it won’t be a flop.

Do your keyword research properly first.

A keyword is a commonly used search term, If you use a popular keywords for your title, description and tags of your video, then it has a far greater chance of being found by someone than an obscure title. Check out Google’s keyword planner tool to find your business most relevant keywords.

 

You have a high bounce rate.

Viewers are bouncing off your site ASAP. The reason for this is either your video isn’t engaging or its not relevant to your description. Hint – Don’t use dense industry jargon to try and make your video look sophisticated. It’s boring… people hate that, and will flick straight off. Use real English and get to your point quickly. Or maybe your video doesn’t live up to its title or thumb nail. Either way, you need to fix it. Google doesn’t like a high bounce rate, and will penalize your video if you don’t do anything about it.

 

Are you giving people a reason to want to watch it?

People don’t surf the net to watch advertisements. They search things for answers. Is your video answering a much asked question? Is there something unique about your video you can’t find anywhere else? With so much great content on the net already, you need to ask yourself a question – Would I take time out of my busy day to watch this?

 

Are you promoting your video on social media?

Newsflash: Social media is massive right now, and it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon… If you are not using its power to syndicate your content, then you are on the back foot from the get go. There are so many new social media sites popping up these days it’s hard to keep up… So to start with, make sure you have mastered the obvious ones like FB, Google+, twitter etc… then start branching out to more niche orientated sites. Tip: embedding your video to multiple social media sites gives you extra kudos with Google and you may get rewarded with better SERPS.

 

Your video is too long.

If your video is like 20 minutes long – trash it and start over. Remember, it’s a business video not a movie. People’s attention spans these days are shockingly short. A good rule of thumb is 30 seconds (ideal) to 2 minutes (max). Be sure to cut to the chase with your business message stating your most important points first.

 

Don’t get disheartened if your first video was a flop – By trying in the first place you are 10 steps ahead of your competition who aren’t trying at all. Keep testing your footage, and your hard work will pay off.
